Block basements at 50 to 80 years old

Block walls from the 1940s through the 1970s were rarely reinforced with steel. They hold up well for decades. Then years of wet clay soil and frost pushing on the upper wall start to show:

A wall that bows inward in the middle
Water at the wall-floor joint every spring, as original drain tile silts up

Floor drain backups

West St. Paul's Public Works department warns that during heavy rain, water can reverse direction through the drain lines and push back up into basement floor drains. Residents own the sewer service line from the house to the main. Backups aren't a foundation problem, but they often get mistaken for one. If water comes up the floor drain, call Public Works (651-552-4150) or a plumber about a backwater valve. If it comes through the walls or at the floor edge, that's a drainage issue.
